Call for Entries – SSC Short Film Critiques

A while back, I ran a series of videos on the channel critiquing your short films. Lately, a lot of you have been asking me to bring it back.

So let’s do it – with a few changes this time.

Instead of critiquing a series of films in each video, I’m going to slow it down and dig deeper into each film. That means I’ll be more nit-picky, and may even go back and re-edit sections of the film to demonstrate an idea.

I’m also renaming the series to “Fixing Your Film.” A bit presumptuous for sure, but it’s catchier than “critiquing your film”.

As always, to be a part of this, your film must be complete and already posted publicly. I’ll link to your film in the description and shout you out in the video, and try to be as constructive as possible.

If you want free, honest, helpful feedback on your work – while also getting more eyeballs and discourse on it in the comments, I encourage you to submit your work!

Submit your film(s) here. →

I’ll try to get the first critique out in the next few weeks.

If you want the same honest, constructive feedback ASAP (and not in the public eye) – check out my consultations page to see what I offer 1-on-1. I do these all the time, and many filmmakers find it so helpful that they book multiple consultations.

On The Road

By the way, I’m typing this from just outside Tallahassee, FL as Toni drives me and our 3 cats on day 5 of our cross-country journey.

Our timing was spot-on, we’re passing through just a day ahead of Hurricane Isaias hitting this part of the country. Actually, we’ve had no rain the whole trip. We started on I-10 in Los Angeles (or “the ten” as we call it there), and have crossed Arizona, New Mexico, Texas (that state is too damn long), Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and now, finally, Florida.

Just another day of driving until we get to the bottom of this also-way-too-long-state and we’ll finally be at our new home.

Highlights of the trip so far:

  • A miraculous Tetris-ing of all our remaining things + 3 cats in my tiny VW Rabbit
  • Landscapes that change multiple times a day
  • Introducing the cats to their aunt and uncle at a bar in New Orleans
  • Guilt-free fast food on a daily basis
  • Taking a much-needed break from my computer
  • Our first time in a Buc-ee’s
  • Toni mastering the art of administering Gabapentin to the cats

Also, the movers took all our belongings about a week before we started driving ourselves out to FL, and we couldn’t believe how much stuff we had accumulated. Like, a shocking amount of stuff.

I worried that it would be painful living without it for that purgatorial week, but we both found it liberating. We secretly hoped that the truck would fly off a cliff en route and we could start anew as minimalists. No such luck so far. But next time we move, we’re losing the stuff.

Here’s the boys taking a load off at a La Quinta somewhere in Texas. They’re big fans. La Quinta – HMU if you need some mascots.

Let’s make some movies.
